Where to stay in Ostia Lido: the best areas

Ostia is Rome’s seaside district, stretching for several kilometres along the coast. Where you stay changes your holiday a lot: some areas are right on the beach but far from the train, others are green and quiet but need a car. Here is our honest guide, from people who live here.

In short

For a holiday without a car, stay in the centre of Ostia Lido, between the Metromare stations and the sea. You will have the beach, restaurants and shops on foot, and Rome 30 minutes away by train.

The areas of Ostia, one by one

The centre (Lido Centro and Piazza Anco Marzio)

Good for: First-time visitors, beach and Rome without a car, restaurants and evenings out.

Keep in mind: The streets around the main square are busier on summer evenings.

The seafront (Lungomare)

Good for: Sea views and beach clubs right outside the door.

Keep in mind: Higher prices, more traffic and noise in summer, and usually a longer walk to the train.

Ostia Ponente (towards the marina)

Good for: The marina, the Idroscalo nature reserve, the PalaPellicone and The Spot skate park.

Keep in mind: Distances to the Metromare stations vary a lot: check the exact location before booking.

Ostia Levante (towards Castel Fusano)

Good for: Quiet residential streets, the pine forest and the Stella Polare and Castel Fusano stations.

Keep in mind: Further from the restaurants and evening life of the centre.

Castel Fusano, Infernetto and Axa

Good for: Houses with gardens and a green setting, for families with a car.

Keep in mind: You will need a car for almost everything, including the beach and the train.

Ostia Antica village

Good for: A quiet medieval borgo next to the archaeological park.

Keep in mind: A few kilometres from the beach; trains to Rome leave from Ostia Antica station.

What to check before you book

  • How far is the nearest Metromare station, if you don’t have a car?
  • How long is the walk to the beach?
  • Is there air conditioning? You will want it in July and August.
  • Is there a lift, if the apartment is on an upper floor?
  • Are there a supermarket and a pharmacy nearby?
  • Is there parking, if you come by car?

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Ostia or in Rome?

For a short city break, the centre of Rome saves travel time. For the sea and the city together, a longer stay or more space for your money, Ostia is a great base: Rome is 30 minutes away by train.

Do I need a car in Ostia?

Not if you stay in the centre: the beach, shops, restaurants and the train to Rome are all within walking distance.

Which area is best for families?

The centre, for the beach and services on foot. If you have a car and want a garden, the green areas inland, such as Infernetto, are also an option.

Where should I stay for the PalaPellicone or The Spot?

Ostia Ponente is the closest area, but the centre is only a few minutes away by taxi or bus and has far more restaurants and services.
