Rome, Ostia Antica and getting around

How to reach the centre of Rome by train in about 30 minutes, a one-day itinerary, the ancient city of Ostia Antica and how to arrive from the airports.

Rome by train in about 30 minutes

Staying in Ostia means the sea in the evening and Rome by day. The Metromare train (also known as the Roma-Lido line) connects Ostia with the city.

  1. Walk 8 to 10 minutes to Lido Centro or Lido Nord station.
  2. Take the Metromare to Porta San Paolo, the end of the line: about 30 minutes from Lido Centro.
  3. Change to Metro line B at Piramide station, right next to it. From there, the Colosseum is just a few stops away.

Tickets

The standard Rome ticket (BIT, €1.50) is valid on the Metromare and gives you 100 minutes of travel, including one metro ride. You can also simply tap your contactless card at the gates: daily spending is capped at €8.50.

Our tips

  • Prices and timetables can change: check the ATAC website or app before you travel
  • Avoid weekday rush hours if you can: trains are less crowded mid-morning

A day in Rome: our suggested itinerary

1

Morning: Colosseum and Roman Forum

From Piramide, Metro B takes you to Colosseo in two stops. Book the Colosseum in advance and continue on foot through the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill.

2

Lunch around Monti

The narrow streets of Monti, a few minutes from the Colosseum, are full of trattorias and small cafés.

3

Afternoon: the historic centre

Walk to Piazza Venezia, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, then on to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.

4

Evening: Trastevere or back to the sea

Have dinner in Trastevere, or head back to Ostia for a sunset walk on the seafront.

Prefer the Vatican? Take Metro B to Termini and change to Metro A for Ottaviano: St Peter's and the Vatican Museums deserve a whole day.

Ostia Antica: the port city of ancient Rome

Just a few minutes by train from the apartments lies one of the largest and best-preserved archaeological sites in Italy. Walking along its streets you pass the forum, baths, temples, houses and the theatre, and the famous mosaics of the Piazzale delle Corporazioni.

In summer the ancient theatre hosts open-air performances in the evening. Right outside the site, the small medieval village is worth a stroll, with the Basilica of Sant'Aurea and the Castle of Julius II.

How to get there

Take the Metromare train to Ostia Antica station: one stop from Lido Nord, two from Lido Centro. Both stations are an 8 to 10-minute walk from the apartments.

Our tips

  • Allow at least half a day, and bring water and a hat in summer: there is little shade
  • Check opening hours and tickets on the official website of the Parco archeologico di Ostia antica before you go

Arriving from the airports

From Fiumicino airport

Fiumicino is the closest airport. A taxi takes about 15 minutes, door to door. Cotral buses also connect the airport with Ostia, with a stop near the apartments: buy tickets at the airport newsstands or in the Cotral app, and check the timetable on the Cotral website.

From Ciampino airport

A taxi is the simplest option. By public transport you will need to go through Rome, which takes much longer.

From Rome Termini station

Take Metro B to Piramide, then the Metromare to Lido Centro or Lido Nord: about an hour in total.
